Wildfire Smoke and Associated Health Risks

Wildfire smoke represents a complex mixture of sub-micron particulates with hundreds of dangerous chemicals.
Wildfire smoke contains high concentration of solid sub-micron airborne particles ranging in size between 0.3 and 0.7 microns (micrometers). The microscopic particulates are considered highly dangerous due to their ability to penetrate deep into the lung tissue and make their way into a blood stream. Besides from aggravating asthma and COPD, fine smoke particles were directly linked to the cardiovascular disease.

Wildfire Smoke also contains over 400 toxic dangerous chemicals including:

  • carbon dioxide
  • carbon monoxide
  • nitrogen oxide
  • polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
  • volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • benzene
  • formaldehyde
  • acrolein

and many other chemicals.

Wildfires represent a major hazard to public, as exposure to wildfire smoke and smoke inhalation can pose many health risks, including short-term and long-term conditions such as:

  • Sore throat
  • Eye and skin irritation
  • Breathing difficulties, shortness of breath
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Visual impairment
  • Respiratory (Pulmonary) Diseases
  • Bronchitis
  • Stroke
  • Heart Disease
  • Asthma
  • Lung Cancer

Multiple studies found that exposure to wildfire smoke can significantly increase the chances of developing asthma and lung infection and cause the irreversible changes to the immune system.
Many studies strongly suggest that exposure to wildfire smoke can have a permanent effect on our immune system, changes that can be passed on to future generations.

Removal of Particulates in Wildfire Smoke

The fine particulates in wildfire smoke have a size range between 0.3 and 0.7 microns (micrometers).
True HEPA filter can trap over 99.97% of all solid sub-micron airborne particulates in the wildfire smoke as small as down to 0.3 micron in size.
Therefore, it is essential that the air filtration system of air purifiers for wildfire smoke contains large and perfectly sealed True HEPA filter.

Important Notice!
The higher efficiency particle filters such as, 99.99% @ 0.3 micron Super HEPA or 99.999% @ 0.1 micron ULPA filters have even higher rate of removal of sub-micron particles. However, the use of tighter particulate filters may result in a reduced air flow, lower number of air changes per hour and a lower overall air purifier performance due to a higher back pressure from a more dense filter media.

Removal of Chemicals in Wildfire Smoke

Large amount of activated carbon adsorbent is absolutely critical for effective removal of most chemicals in wildfire smoke.
The specialty enhanced adsorbent have a higher adsorption capacity in trapping VOCs (volatile organic compounds), ammonia, formaldehyde and many other hard to remove specific chemicals.
Therefore, large amount of adsorbent in the air purifier air filtration system is absolutely vital for effective removal of most regular and specific chemicals in wildfire smoke.

The combination of both, True HEPA filter and large amount of activated carbon adsorbent (specialty enhanced adsorbent in particular) in the air purifier air filtration system will render the best possible air cleaning result in purifying the air from most air pollutants and air contaminants in wildfire smoke.

Wildfire Smoke Removal Rate

The number of Air Changes per Hour (ACH), indicating how many time the air purifier can draw the entire volume of polluted air through the air filtration system, is another factor of major importance.
It directly affects the rate of removal of air pollutants and the size of a maximum cleaning area, in which the air purifier can effectively maintain smoke-free environment.

For that reason, the air purifiers with higher Air Flow rating CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) capable to provide the higher number of air changes per hour (ACH), are better air purifiers for effective purifying of the air in your home or office from wildfire smoke.
